Moto Z2 Play Review – The Mods-Phone!

Reviews

Motorola recently launched the Moto Z2 Play to pitch against the likes of OnePlus 3T and Xiaomi Mi5. The product launched successfully and has been doing quite well in the market so far. Earlier we posted the first impressions about Moto Z2 Play here and now after playing around with the device for a few weeks we are back with a detailed review of the Moto Z2 Play which has been a big hit so far. Without further ado let’s begin and have a look how the phone stacks up.

Design – Moto Z2 Play Review

Moto Z2 Play has a curved metal body with one of the sleekest designs ever. The body of the phone is only 0.24 inches and comes with AMOLED display.

This display saves a lot of battery as only the pixels that are not black light up. This comes in handy when you use the Moto display feature that lets you check the notifications without lighting up your entire screen.

The phone weighs only 147 grams and feels like a perfect fit in your hand.

Even a 5.5 inch screen does not seem too big due to the sleekness of the phone. This means you will not end up with any funny bulges in your pants.

Display – Moto Z2 Play Review

A 5.5 inch AMOLED display coupled with Corning Gorilla Glass 3 gives you the best experience that you can find out there. The phone works perfectly in broad daylight. The screen does not seem to be dull or too reflective under direct sunlight. A dust and splash resistant body adds to the overall experience. This makes the phone a must buy just to experience the smoothness of the display and the colors.

Due to the fact that the phone has an AMOLED display another important trick that comes in handy is that a black wallpaper would mean that your phone would consume even lesser power giving you an exceptionally long battery life!

Performance – Moto Z2 Play Review

The phone has a Snapdragon 626 processor which is clocked at 2.2 GHz. The Adreno 506 GPU and 4 GB RAM 64 GB storage ensure that the phone runs smoothly. We played games like Modern Combat, Asphalt 8, Dead Trigger and Injustice 2. We did not find any issues with the gaming experience. The games ran smoothly and we realised that we could have fun for a longer period of time.

This was mostly because the phone did not heat up much during gameplay. The battery drain was also not too high while playing games which made the experience even better. Add to this the Android Nougat out of the box which should soon be updated to the latest version of android i.e. Android O as soon as it comes to Motorola phones as Moto Z2 Play has been listed in the devices which would officially run Android O. This is one of the devices where one can enjoy stock android feel (apart from the Oxygen OS on OnePlus) which is smooth and fluid.

Camera – Moto Z2 Play Review

One of the best features of Moto Z2 Play is its camera. The performance of the camera was more than decent with the back snapper being 12 MP with f/1.7 along with the dual tone flash. The dual tone flash adds that extra zing to your pictures.

It adds the warm yellow light along with the cool white light to give you that perfect flash lighting for your photo shoots. Low light images with the camera were also quite impressive. We tried clicking some pictures that turned out to be great without any editing.

The front camera is a 5 MP f/2.2 shooter and it also has the dual tone flash. The images with the front camera looked exceptional. We believe that it can be the selfie camera that you deserve to have in your pocket!

Battery – Moto Z2 Play Review

Although the phone has a 3000 mAh battery, it can easily last a day. Due to the AMOLED display, the battery consumption of the phone is drastically reduced. Apart from this the RAM management of the phone is such that while the phone is idle, it does not consume excessive power. This is one differentiating factor from a lot of the devices that are in the market today. The battery life lasted for a day and a half on light usage. This was reduced to a whole day after heavy usage. Half an hour of graphic heavy gaming only reduced the battery by about 2-3% which seemed like a great bargain. Also, the phone supports fast charging. This means that you can charge your phone up to 60% in just half an hour and it would be ready to go!

Overall we believe that Moto Z2 Play is great considering its price. It comes with a great camera, an AMOLED screen and well, the choice of using the uber cool Moto Mods! With a more competitive price the device could have been termed a game changer. Moto has always maintained the stand that one should not run behind specs, and feel the ‘experience’ of the device which seems to be true in the case of this device.
